La palabra cisma se deriva del griego σχισμα, schisma, significando división o separación (de σχιζο, schizo). Entre los católicos, se distingue a alguien que se ha separado, un cismático, de un hereje, que es quien ha negado una parte del dogma; así, un cismático rompe la unidad de la Iglesia en su organización, pero no en la unidad de la fe. Un cismático es una persona que crea o inicia un cisma en una iglesia u otra organización o es un miembro de una iglesia cismática. Cismático como un adjetivo se refiere a ideas, políticas, etc. que se creen llevan hacia o promueven el cisma, o describe una iglesia cristiana que se ha alejado de cualquier comunión que el que emplea la palabra cisma considera la verdadera iglesia cristiana. De ahí vienen los adjetivos ortodoxo (el que cumple las reglas existentes) y heterodoxo (el que rompe las reglas para crear las suyas propias, el cismático).
